Limited Edition Print - Ima-Abasi Okon, Call Him; The A-M-P-L-I-F-I-C-A-T-I-O-N of the soul [PREMATURE | sprinkling/preventable | Death] — easy sunrise, 2017
Ima-Abasi Okon is an artist whose practice spans video, screen printing, sculpture, painting, and publishing. After graduating with a Communication Design MA from Central Saint Martins, she further honed her skills during a two-year Fellowship at The Royal Academy Schools in London. Okon's work explores the complexities of language, delving into questions of aspiration and failure.
Her solo show "The Fountains Are Decorative And Are Not Water Play Areas" in 2014, which emerged from a micro-residency at Supercollider Contemporary Art Projects, Blackpool, showcased her unique artistic vision. In addition, Okon has participated in various group exhibitions and screenings, including "Untitled" at New Art Exchange and "Mount Florida 4" at Mount Florida Studios. Her involvement in projects such as "Off the Wall" at A.L.L. and "In This Soup We Swim" at Kingsgate Project Space demonstrates her commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. Her work offers a thought-provoking exploration of identity, power dynamics, and cultural nuances.
In this print, Okon creates unique monoprints, each individually coated with varnish after being made. The artist has a tradition of giving her works long and visually striking titles, which play a significant role in understanding the meaning and subject of the artwork. This title in particular can be seen as a reference the piece's spiritual aspect, which is further emphasized by the use of dark, deep browns, and gold colors. These colours evoke a sense of sacredness connected to the earth, like natural wood that has been skillfully gilded by expert artisans from the past.
